Stewards of the Land is a multimedia documentary project that was completed over the course of 2001, 2002, and 2003 in North Carolina’s Central Piedmont Region—an area known as The Triangle. The Triangle—anchored by the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill—is known for its vibrant network of organic and sustainable farms that supply the community with locally grown food nearly year-round.
The focus of Stewards of the Land is six small-scale farmers who are profiled using sound, images, and writing. And their work is contextualized through a series of articles examining sustainable agriculture in the area, the state of North Carolina, and the country as a whole.
We hope the project will introduce viewers to a group of farmers who embody the diversity that exists within the non-corporate farming community—a community, we believe, that represents solutions to many of today's seemingly insurmountable problems. These farmers represent land preservation, environmental stewardship, healthy living, community accountability, and a significant reduction of fossil fuel consumption. We thank them for their service and for sharing their lives with us to make this project possible.
Stewards of the Land contributors are Heather Barnes, Brad Horn, Cathy Leicht, Mike Nutt, J.L. Reid, jj richardson, and Tes Thraves. Stewards of the Land farmers are Alex Hitt, Elise Margoles, Harvey Harman, Nena Woody, Stanley Hughes, and Steven Moize.
